Hot Water Checks Before You Call
A few quick things worth ruling out first:
- For Electric systems: Check your switchboard. A tripped circuit breaker is a common cause of a sudden loss of hot water and takes seconds to check. Reset it once and see if the system recovers. If it trips again, leave it and call us — a repeatedly tripping breaker means something needs looking at.
- For Gas systems: Check that your gas supply is on and that other gas appliances in the home are working. If everything gas-related is out, contact your gas retailer before calling a plumber. If only the hot water is affected, call us.
- For Continuous flow systems: Check the unit isn’t displaying an error code. Most modern instantaneous units show a fault code on the front panel. Note the code when you call us — it helps us come prepared.
If none of that points to an obvious answer, call us and we’ll diagnose from there.

Ongoing Maintenance To Get the Most From Your System
Hot water systems don’t need much attention, but a small amount of maintenance goes a long way.
- Have the anode rod checked every five years. The sacrificial anode inside a storage tank is what prevents the tank itself from corroding — once it’s depleted, the tank starts to corrode instead. Replacing it is inexpensive and can add years to the life of the system.
- Check the area around the system periodically for signs of moisture, rust staining, or weeping from the pressure relief valve. Catching a slow deterioration early is far cheaper than dealing with a failed tank.
If your system is more than ten years old and you haven’t had it looked at, a service visit is worthwhile, particularly before winter, when demand increases and an ageing system is most likely to give up.
