No Hot Water? We Can Install A New Hot Water Service Today.

Waking up to no hot water is one of those problems that needs sorting the same day. Whether your system has stopped working, is leaking, or you’ve come home to a cold shower and no obvious reason why, call us and we’ll get someone to you fast. We’re Sydney-based and on call.

Hot Water Checks Before You Call

A few quick things worth ruling out first:

  • For Electric systems: Check your switchboard. A tripped circuit breaker is a common cause of a sudden loss of hot water and takes seconds to check. Reset it once and see if the system recovers. If it trips again, leave it and call us — a repeatedly tripping breaker means something needs looking at.
  • For Gas systems: Check that your gas supply is on and that other gas appliances in the home are working. If everything gas-related is out, contact your gas retailer before calling a plumber. If only the hot water is affected, call us.
  • For Continuous flow systems: Check the unit isn’t displaying an error code. Most modern instantaneous units show a fault code on the front panel. Note the code when you call us — it helps us come prepared.

If none of that points to an obvious answer, call us and we’ll diagnose from there.

What The Blue Rhino Plumbing Team Can Do

We install, repair, and replace all types of hot water systems across Sydney — on the same visit where possible.

  • Repairs: Many hot water issues, a failed element, a faulty thermostat, a pressure relief valve weeping, a pilot light that won’t stay lit — can be repaired on the spot. We carry common parts for the major brands so we’re not leaving you without hot water while we wait on a part.
  • Same-day replacement:When a system is beyond repair or simply at the end of its life, we can replace it the same day in most cases. We’ll talk you through the options honestly — including whether a like-for-like replacement makes sense or whether it’s worth considering something different given your household’s needs and energy costs.
  • New installations: Upgrading to a larger system, switching from electric to gas, adding a dedicated hot water point, or installing a zip-style boiling water unit — we handle all of it.
  • Leak repairs: A hot water system that’s leaking from the tank, the pressure relief valve, or the connections needs attention quickly. Water sitting around the base of a unit or pooling nearby is a sign something has failed — call us before it becomes a bigger problem.

Ongoing Maintenance To Get the Most From Your System

Hot water systems don’t need much attention, but a small amount of maintenance goes a long way.

  • Have the anode rod checked every five years. The sacrificial anode inside a storage tank is what prevents the tank itself from corroding — once it’s depleted, the tank starts to corrode instead. Replacing it is inexpensive and can add years to the life of the system.
  • Check the area around the system periodically for signs of moisture, rust staining, or weeping from the pressure relief valve. Catching a slow deterioration early is far cheaper than dealing with a failed tank.

If your system is more than ten years old and you haven’t had it looked at, a service visit is worthwhile, particularly before winter, when demand increases and an ageing system is most likely to give up.

Choosing the Right Hot Water System

If you’re replacing a system or considering an upgrade, here’s a quick guide to what’s available.

  • Electric storage The most common system in Sydney homes. A tank heats and stores water, keeping it ready when you need it. Simple, reliable, and widely compatible with solar. The main downside is running cost — heating a tank of water continuously uses more energy than heating on demand. Off-peak tariffs help significantly if your property has access to them. Good choice for households that want low upfront cost and straightforward operation.
  • Electric instantaneous (continuous flow) Heats water on demand rather than storing it, so you’re not paying to keep a tank warm. Compact and suited to smaller households or specific applications like a single bathroom. Requires adequate electrical capacity — not all homes can run a high-draw instantaneous unit without an upgrade to the switchboard.
  • Gas storage Heats faster than electric storage and typically costs less to run on natural gas. A good all-round option for larger households with high hot water demand. Requires a gas connection and adequate flue.
  • Gas instantaneous (continuous flow) Heats water the moment you turn on the tap — no tank, no standby heat loss, and no running out mid-shower. The most popular upgrade choice for families replacing an ageing storage system. Available in a range of flow rates to handle multiple simultaneous outlets. Requires natural gas or LPG and appropriate flue installation.
  • Heat pump Uses ambient air to heat water rather than a direct heat source, making it significantly more efficient than a conventional electric storage system — typically two to three times less energy for the same volume of hot water. Higher upfront cost, but eligible for government rebates that substantially reduce the price. Works best in a well-ventilated location and is less effective in very cold conditions, though this is rarely a factor in Sydney’s climate. An increasingly popular choice for households looking to reduce energy bills without switching to gas.
  • Instantaneous boiling water units (Zip and similar) Under-bench or over-bench units that deliver filtered boiling, chilled, or sparkling water on demand. Not a hot water system replacement, these sit alongside your existing system and service a specific tap, typically in the kitchen. Popular in both residential and commercial settings. We supply and install Zip and equivalent units.

Hot Water FAQS

Find answers to common questions about our plumbing services, pricing, and 24/7 availability across Sydney.

A leak from the base of the tank usually means the tank itself has corroded through, which is not repairable. The system will need replacing. Call us and we’ll confirm when we arrive — but if water is actively pooling, it’s worth turning off the cold water supply to the unit in the meantime. There’s usually an isolation valve on the pipe feeding into the top of the system.

Electric and gas storage systems typically last ten to fifteen years with reasonable maintenance. Continuous flow units tend to last longer. If your system is over twelve years old and starting to cause problems, replacement is usually more cost-effective than repeated repairs.

Yes — it’s one of the more common upgrades we do. It involves connecting to your existing gas supply and installing the appropriate flue. We’ll assess the setup at your property and let you know if anything additional is required.

As a rough guide: a household of one to two people typically suits a 125 to 160 litre storage system or a smaller continuous flow unit. Three to four people, 160 to 250 litres or a mid-range continuous flow. Five or more, 250 litres and above or a higher flow-rate continuous unit. The right answer also depends on your usage patterns, which we’ll factor in when we recommend something.

A pressure relief valve that weeps occasionally under high pressure is doing its job. One that drips constantly, or discharges heavily, is either faulty or indicating that the pressure or temperature in the system is running too high. It needs to be looked at — a continuously discharging relief valve is both a water waste and a warning sign.
