Blocked Drain or Toilet? What to Do First.

Before you call a plumber, run through these quick checks, they take two minutes and sometimes solve the problem entirely.

For a blocked toilet

Don’t keep flushing!
One flush that doesn’t clear is enough to tell you something is wrong, and repeated flushing risks an overflow.
If you suspect something is blocking it like a toy or a sanitary item, can you hook it out?
If you cannot see what is blocking the toilet, use a plunger that covers the trap ( the outlet) with several slow, deliberate pushes rather than rapid ones. If it doesn’t clear after a couple of attempts, stop and call us.

For a blocked sink or basin

Check the drain cover isn’t just clogged with hair or debris, it’s the most common cause and takes thirty seconds to fix. If the drain is clear but water is still sitting, try a plunger.
Avoid repeatedly pouring boiling water into PVC pipes and skip the chemical drain cleaners, they rarely work on a proper blockage and can damage pipes and fittings over time.

For a blocked shower

Same as the basin, check the cover first. Hair build-up at the drain is usually the cause of slow shower drains.
If you can remove the showers drain strip and fish out hair sitting in the drain.
Or if you cannot remove the drain strip. getting a small drain hook from the hardware store is often all you need to fish out the hair.

If the Toilet Is Overflowing Right Now

Turn off the water supply to the toilet, there’s an isolation valve on the wall or floor behind the pan.
Turn it clockwise to close. This stops more water entering the bowl while you deal with the situation and wait for us.

All sinks and toilets are slow draining

If all the home is affected, call us! Multiple slow drains usually mean the problem is further down the line, not something a plunger will reach or you can DIY fix or clear.

What The Blue Rhino Plumbing Team Can Do

Most blocked drains can be cleared on the same visit.
Depending on what we find, here’s what we’ll use:

  • Pressure plungers or air blasters: For blockages in the pipe itself and the most common fix for kitchen, laundry, and bathroom drains. Fast and effective for grease, hair, and debris build-up.
  • High pressure water jetting: For tougher blockages, scale build-up, or drains that block repeatedly. A high-pressure jet clears the full diameter of the pipe rather than just punching a hole through the obstruction, which means it stays clear for longer.
  • CCTV drain camera inspection: When we need to see what’s actually going on inside the pipe — particularly useful for recurring blockages, suspected root intrusion, or drains that are slow without an obvious cause. We put a camera down the line and show you exactly what we find.
  • Tree root cutting: Roots that have grown into a pipe can be cut back on the same visit using a root-cutting head on the drain machine. If the root intrusion is significant, we’ll also advise on whether the pipe needs repair or relining to prevent recurrence.
  • Pipe relining: Where a pipe has cracked, collapsed, or been damaged by roots, relining inserts a new pipe within the existing one — no excavation required in most cases. A long-term solution that restores full flow and structural integrity.
  • Emergency drain unblocking: We’re on call for blocked drains that can’t wait, an overflowing toilet, a completely blocked kitchen drain, or a situation where the drain is backing up into the home.

Why Drains Block and How to Reduce the Risk

If you’re in the middle of a blocked drain right now, call us first and come back to this later.

Grease and fat build-up

The most common cause of blocked kitchen drains. Cooking fat poured down the sink is liquid when it’s hot and solid when it cools — coating the inside of pipes over time until the flow slows to a trickle. Even small amounts add up. The fix is simple: let fat cool and dispose of it in the bin rather than the sink. A regular flush of hot water and dish soap helps but won’t reverse years of build-up.

Hair and soap scum

The combination of hair and soap residue is behind the majority of slow bathroom and shower drains. A drain cover or hair catcher over the drain is the easiest prevention available — cheap, easy to clean, and highly effective. Make clearing it part of your weekly routine.

Wet wipes and sanitary products

Wet wipes — including those labelled flushable — do not break down in the same way toilet paper does. They catch on pipe joints, accumulate, and cause serious blockages in household drains and the wider sewer system. Sanitary products, cotton pads, and nappy liners belong in the bin, not the toilet. This is one of the most common and most avoidable causes of blocked toilets we deal with.

Tree root intrusion

Sydney’s established suburbs are full of large trees whose root systems follow moisture. The smallest crack or poorly sealed joint in an underground drain is enough for a root to find its way in. Once inside, roots grow and branch until the pipe is partially or fully blocked. Older clay or concrete pipes are most susceptible. A CCTV inspection will tell you quickly whether roots are a factor, and regular jetting can keep affected pipes clear between more permanent repairs.

Foreign objects

Children’s toys, toothbrush caps, cotton buds, jewellery — toilets and drains collect things they were never meant to handle. If something has gone down that shouldn’t have, let us know when you call — it affects how we approach the job.

Collapsed or damaged pipes

In older Sydney homes, clay or concrete sewer pipes can crack, settle, or partially collapse over time. A damaged pipe doesn’t drain properly regardless of what’s in it, and no amount of clearing will fix a structural problem. A CCTV inspection is the only way to know for certain, and pipe relining is often a far less disruptive fix than excavation and replacement.

What you can do to Avoid blocked drains

  • Put a hair catcher on every shower and bath drain and clear it weekly. It takes ten seconds and prevents the majority of bathroom blockages.
  • Never pour cooking fat, oil, or grease down the kitchen sink. Wipe pans with paper towel before washing and dispose of collected fat in the bin.
  • Only flush toilet paper. Everything else — wipes, cotton pads, sanitary products — goes in the bin, regardless of what the packaging says.
  • If your home has mature trees near the sewer line, a CCTV inspection every few years is worthwhile. Catching root intrusion early is far cheaper than dealing with a collapsed pipe.
  • Know where your drain cleanout points are. If a blockage does occur, accessible cleanouts make the job faster and less expensive to clear.

Blocked Drain FAQS

Find answers to common questions about our plumbing services, pricing, and 24/7 availability across Sydney.

We’re Sydney-local and treat overflowing or completely blocked drains as urgent. Call us and we’ll give you an honest ETA.

We’d rather you didn’t. Most off-the-shelf drain cleaners don’t clear a genuine blockage — they just sit in the pipe. They’re also harsh on pipe materials and fittings, and caustic chemicals in the line make the job more unpleasant and potentially hazardous for our team when we arrive.

A drain that drains slowly and then clears is a partial blockage working its way towards a full one. It won’t fix itself, and the next episode will be worse. Getting it cleared while it’s still draining is far easier and cheaper than dealing with it once it’s completely blocked.

Not necessarily. A single slow drain usually points to a localised blockage close to that fixture. If two or more drains are slow at the same time, particularly in different parts of the house, the blockage is likely in the main line — which needs professional attention.

A drain that blocks repeatedly after clearing usually means the underlying cause was never addressed. Clearing the blockage restores flow, but if there’s a crack letting roots in, a section of pipe that’s collapsed or sagging, or years of grease coating the pipe walls, the same problem will keep coming back. A CCTV camera inspection is the quickest way to find out what’s actually going on, once we can see inside the pipe, we can tell you whether it needs a proper clean with high pressure jetting, a reline, or something else. Clearing it again without investigating is just delaying the same call.
